Two years later, the rustling of foliage and chirping of birds were the only sounds that echoed through the Napier Estate. A soft English summer sunlight poured through the open window of the nursery, casting an ethereal glow on the room. Within this haven, Hortense Napier sat, blissfully cradling her newborn daughter, Alexandra.

There was something miraculous about her. Each delicate coo, every tiny grasp of her small fingers, brought an outpour of love that Hortense hadn’t believed possible until she’d first held Thibault, her firstborn. The miracle of it all had only multiplied with Alexandra’s birth. The joy within her radiated with each loving glance she bestowed upon her children.

Before she could lose herself further in the contentment of the moment, the door creaked open. Cillian stepped in, his eyes lighting up at the sight of his wife and daughter. His steps were feather-light, as if afraid of shattering the moment.

“Hortense, she’s beautiful.” His voice was filled with so much tenderness that it made Hortense’s heart ache with love. He extended a finger and their little daughter coiled her own around it. “Just like her mother.”

“Do you really think so?” Hortense asked, her eyes sparkling with motherly pride.

“I know so,” Cillian responded, placing a gentle kiss on Hortense’s forehead before turning his attention back to Alexandra. He cradled her tiny hand, his features softening. “She has your eyes, your same fiery spirit. I wouldn’t be surprised if she grew up to be a politician one day.”

A hearty laugh escaped Hortense. “Are you suggesting that our daughter, the future Duchess, should meddle in politics?”

“Why not? With your progressive thoughts and my diplomatic skills, I dare say she could rule the world if she wanted,” he chuckled, a mischievous twinkle in his eye. “The world needs more women like you in power.”

“Speaking of women in power…” Hortense began, shifting Alexandra into a more comfortable position. “I’ve been in talks with several universities about extending their services to women. I’m hopeful that by the time she’s old enough, Alexandra will have every opportunity available to her, irrespective of her gender.”

“That’s my wife,” Cillian beamed, pride evident in his voice. “Never one to back down from a challenge.”

Their quiet exchange was interrupted by the patter of tiny feet and a joyful squeal. Thibault toddled in, his eyes wide with excitement. “Mama, Papa,” he lisped, reaching out for them. Behind him, their nurse trailed, a comforting presence.

Cillian scooped Thibault into his arms, balancing him on his hip. “There’s my little man,” he said, ruffling Thibault’s golden curls. “Have you come to meet your baby sister?”

As Thibault gurgled a positive response, Cillian eased him closer to the baby. With a curious gaze, Thibault peered down at his new sister. This was their family – perfect and complete.

The sun had begun to dip beyond the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. The evening promised to be a lively one as Hortense and Cillian readied themselves for their first outing since Alexandra’s birth. A wave of anticipation washed over Hortense. She was looking forward to Mercy’s show, more so because it would be their first family gathering in a long time.

As Hortense settled Alexandra in her crib and kissed Thibault goodnight, a sense of fulfillment washed over her. Her life, with all its ups and downs, had led her to this moment of serene bliss. She didn’t need to be a duchess or a lady of influence; all she ever needed was here in this room – her family. She glanced back at Cillian, who held Thibault in his arms, a picture of a perfect father. This was her life, and it was more beautiful than she could have ever imagined.

“Ready to go?” Cillian’s voice broke through her thoughts.

Hortense nodded, placing one last kiss on Alexandra’s forehead before heading out with her husband. The night had just begun, and it was promising to be a memorable one. They were together, they were happy, and they were in love. What else could they possibly need?

*

Their carriage slowed down as they neared the grand structure of the Drury Lane theatre, brilliantly lit up and teeming with people. Hortense’s heart pounded with excitement as she watched the crowd gather. There was a certain energy in the air, a shared anticipation for the night ahead.

Before she could say anything more, Cillian helped her down from the carriage, his firm hand a reassuring presence at her side. The theatre’s entrance was buzzing with anticipation, voices weaving through the air with excitement. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a familiar pair.

“Cillian, look over there,” Hortense whispered, nudging her husband. She pointed towards the entrance, where newlyweds Parson and Laura stood, hand in hand. Even though they had decided to live abroad, their fondness for England and their close-knit circle always drew them back.

Parson, noticing their arrival, waved enthusiastically. “Hortense, Cillian!” he called out, beaming at them.

Cillian returned the greeting, a warm smile on his face. “Parson, Laura. You both look as radiant as ever.”

Laura blushed, her happiness apparent in her sparkling eyes. “Thank you, Cillian. You two look wonderful yourselves.”

While the men delved into friendly banter, Hortense took Laura aside. “How does it feel to be back in England?” she asked, genuinely curious.

“It feels like coming home,” Laura responded, her voice filled with warmth. “We love our life abroad, but England will always have a special place in our hearts.”

Before they could continue, a lively group made its way towards them. The Barbours were hard to miss: the marquess with his commanding presence, Annabelle in her stylish gown, and the Comte Marc Erlanger with his French elegance. Each of them was radiant, buzzing with anticipation for the evening. Annabelle, catching sight of Hortense, rushed forward to greet her, and an air of joviality washed over the gathering.

From the sidelines, Hortense’s parents watched, her father slightly disapproving of the modern amenities, yet unable to hide his fascination. He and her mother were certainly not city-dwellers, preferring the quiet countryside, but even they could not resist the allure of the capital.

Hortense could feel the warmth of love and camaraderie enveloping them all, making her heart flutter with joy.

Cillian, sensing her emotional state, squeezed her hand reassuringly. As they entered the grand auditorium, Hortense couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. The grandeur of it all never ceased to amaze her.

They made their way to their private box, the best seats in the house, a testament to their status. As she settled into her seat, Hortense couldn’t help but feel grateful for the life she had.

Once comfortably seated in their private box, with an unparalleled view of the stage, Hortense’s heart beat in time with the orchestra’s overture. She glanced around, taking in the spectacle, the richly attired audience, the glow of the chandeliers. Cillian’s hand found hers, offering a squeeze as the curtains rose, their shared anticipation tangible in the air.

Mercy’s new show was a vibrant, engaging spectacle from start to end, and they were utterly spellbound. Laughter and gasps echoed through the theatre at all the right moments, a testament to the brilliance of the performance. In a more subdued moment, as the thrill of the show faded into the background, Hortense found herself drawn back to the man beside her.

She glanced at Cillian, watching as the stage light danced on his features. His eyes, ever so expressive, mirrored his enjoyment. A tender smile played on his lips, and in that moment, he looked more handsome than ever. The sight of him, so enraptured, made her heart flutter.

“I am so lucky,” she whispered, her gaze meeting his. His eyes warmed at her words, their shared love a comforting balm in a world that could often be overwhelming.

“You’re not the only one feeling fortunate, love,” he replied, a light chuckle lacing his words. His gaze held a world of promises, ones of endless love, happiness, and togetherness.

The evening was indeed special, not just for the grandeur of the show and the company, but for the private moments shared between Hortense and Cillian. They reflected on their journey, their struggles, and their victories. They had grown and changed so much, their shared life a beautiful testament to their unwavering love and commitment.

“Do you ever think about what life would have been like if we hadn’t met?” Hortense asked, her curiosity getting the best of her.

Cillian pondered over her question, a thoughtful look crossing his features. “I do,” he admitted. “But those thoughts aren’t worth dwelling upon. The life we have, the love we share, is more than I ever dreamt of. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

His sincerity warmed Hortense’s heart. They had indeed beaten the odds. They had forged a life for themselves, filled with love, companionship, and a shared vision for the future. The thought filled her with a deep sense of contentment, one that no words could adequately express.

As the applause filled the air, signalling the end of the show, Hortense turned to her husband. Her eyes brimmed with unshed tears of joy.

“I love you, Cillian. More than I ever thought possible,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper.

Cillian looked at her, his gaze soft. His fingers gently wiped away a stray tear that had escaped down her cheek. “And I you, my dear Hortense. More than words could ever express.”

Their love, strong and enduring, filled the air around them. As they watched the final curtain call, their hands tightly clasped, they knew they had everything they ever wanted. It was the perfect end to a perfect evening, a poignant reminder of the life they had built together. A life that was their own ‘happily ever after.’

THE END

    1. I enjoyed reading this romantic novel
but it was a rather complex one and long as well. I did find both Cillian and
Hortense’s relationship rather strained do to having to keep up the
      customs pertaining to royalty.
I am glad that the story line did end with a “happily ever after “ ending.
      Keep up the good work,Abigail!

    2. I’m glad you included the extended epilogue. It rounded up the corners to the story. A pleasant easy read for an enjoyable day! I look forward to sharing & encouraging others to read & follow you!!

    3. I really enjoyed this story. Cillian and Hortense have a difficult situation. She is a Lady who has fallen on hard times and is working as a maid. Cillian is a Duke. I like the way they try hard to keep to propriety within the rules of society. Despite all the difficulties they eventually find a way to happiness. The book is well-written. Thank you.

    4. I have enjoyed reading your stories of all these lovely ladies. Thank you, Abigail!
There’s just one thing that I’d like to mention, if I may. Your use of “God” was prolific in the final book. Please understand that there are still those of us who find this offensive. You are a good writer, Abigail, and I know you can express yourself ably without taking God’s name in vain. Happy writing!

  1. Beautiful story and very interesting and entertaining characters. Absolutely loved this amazing journey of adventure and love. Hard to put down and the extended epilogue is quite inspiring. I definitely love this wonderful story. Excellent writing and I absolutely recommend reading this love story.

  2. A lovely heartwarming story. Even though love between the different levels of society does happen. The heart knows what it wants! Hortense is able to help her family by becoming a maid, even though she is from landed gentry and has a strong sense of what is appropriate. She knows that a love between her and a duke would not be well received by members of the ton. I love her calm and rational spirit. A good read, though there are quite a few grammatical errors to overlook.

  3. I enjoyed the storyline a lot. The characters were well thought out and were very entertaining. Hortense and Cillian and Parson and Laura made very cute couples.

  4. What a lovely story!! *sighs* I was so engrossed that I read it straight through today. Thank you so very much for sharing your talent with us.

  7. I started to read and could not put it down. When I finished the sun was coming up. I had to go to bed so did not read the extended epilogue until this morning. I have not done that in a while. The characters and the storyline were fascinating. Thank you for being such a wonderful author I will continue to read.

  8. All I can say is DITTO to all of the above. Especially Shirley Foster on August 4,2024@5:45pm. I’ve enjoyed every book that I have read of yours. The typos throw me off a bit, but they don’t stop me. Good job. Well written. Happy New Year😇
